8. Removable Fabric Cover for Lidded Storage Bins

Lidded storage bins are everywhere, but they’re often the most visually awkward pieces on a shelf. A removable fabric cover hides the plastic entirely and gives the whole bin a softer, more furniture-like presence.
For this project, measure the top, bottom, and all four sides of the bin. Cut one piece of fabric for the top, four strips for the sides, and one piece for the bottom. Sew the side strips together to form a tube, attach the top and bottom pieces, then fit the cover over the bin like a sleeve. Add a strip of hook-and-loop tape, button closure, or a simple tie to keep the cover in place.
This style is ideal for garage storage, out-of-season clothing, or any bin you want to blend into a room rather than let it shout “plastic.” Pick a neutral linen for a calm, cohesive look, or choose a bold pattern to make the bin a feature piece. The cover can be removed for washing whenever it needs a refresh.
If sewing the whole thing feels like too much, you can cheat with a single rectangle of fabric that’s long enough to wrap around the bin and fold over the top. Tuck the edges under the lid and let the cover do the rest.
