6. Ombre Rainbow for a Nursery or Playroom
Rainbow string art is a joyful way to add color to a child’s space, and the ombre effect keeps it from feeling like a cartoon. Choose five to six thread colors that transition gradually, from coral to peach to mustard to sage to dusty blue, or whatever gradient suits the room.
Draw a series of nested arcs, each one slightly smaller than the last. Nail along every arc, then fill each band with its own color, keeping the wrapping direction consistent within each band so the color blocks stay distinct. Finish the ends with a small cloud shape in white or cream thread.
Safety note: If this is going in a nursery, drive the nails in firmly and check that none are loose. You can also seal the finished piece with a thin layer of clear craft sealer to lock the thread in place. Hang it above a crib at a safe distance, or better yet, above a dresser or reading chair.
💡 Pro Tip: Buy one skein per color band rather than trying to stretch two skeins across six colors. Running short mid-band is the most common frustration with rainbow projects.
