7. Classic Leaning Wall Ladder Rack

7

Leaning ladder racks are having a quiet moment in interior design, and the same idea works wonderfully for magazines. The leaning style doesn’t require wall mounting, which makes it renter-friendly and easy to reposition whenever the mood strikes.

Build two long side rails around 60 inches tall and five or six horizontal rungs spaced about 10 inches apart. The bottom rungs should be slightly closer together to cradle the magazines, while the upper rungs can hold blankets, scarves, or a trailing plant. Cut the bottom of each side rail at a 10-degree angle so the rack leans stably against the wall without sliding.

Materials: 1×2 lumber for rungs, 1×3 lumber for rails, wood screws, wood glue, stain or paint, felt pads for the bottom. Time: 3 to 4 hours. Difficulty: beginner. Felt pads on the bottom corners protect both the floor and the wall. Add rubber bumpers about two-thirds of the way up the back of each rail to prevent the rack from sliding forward.

This rack does double duty as a display piece. Drape a folded linen throw over the top rung, let a pothos vine trail down from the highest shelf, and stack your favorite magazines in the middle rungs where they’re easy to grab.
