3. Minimalist Scandinavian Wall Pocket
Wall-mounted magazine pockets are brilliant for smaller living rooms where floor space is precious. A Scandinavian-inspired version takes the basic pocket concept and strips it down to its essentials: flat plane, clean joinery, light wood, and absolutely nothing extra.
Build three identical rectangular pieces, roughly 14 inches wide and 24 inches tall, with ¼-inch plywood backs and ½-inch sides that form shallow pockets. Stack them vertically with a 2-inch gap between each pocket for visual breathing room. Mount the whole unit directly to wall studs using a French cleat or simple keyhole hangers cut into the back. Pre-finish everything before wall mounting to avoid drips on the wall.
Materials: birch plywood, wood glue, brad nails, keyhole hangers, clear matte finish. Time: 3 to 5 hours. Difficulty: beginner. The beauty of this style is restraint, so don’t add decorative trim or contrasting stains. A coat of clear matte finish lets the pale birch speak for itself.
Install the rack near your favorite reading chair and keep the styling minimal: a folded throw draped over the chair arm, a single potted plant on a side table, and maybe a small ceramic dish for reading glasses.
