4. Farmhouse X-Side Floor Rack
The X-frame or cross-frame farmhouse style has been popular for years, and it translates beautifully into a magazine rack. The crossed side supports feel sturdy and a little nostalgic, calling to mind old library furniture and farmhouse tables.
Build the rack with two X-shaped side panels, each made from four pieces of 1×2 lumber about 18 inches long, joined at the center with half-lap joints or simply glued and screwed. Connect the two Xs with a flat bottom shelf and a horizontal dowel rod near the top that holds magazines in place by their folded edge. Use pine for that classic farmhouse feel, then distress the corners lightly with a hammer and chain before staining.
Materials: pine boards, 1×2 lumber, dowel rod, wood glue, screws, stain, soft matte sealer. Time: 4 to 6 hours. Difficulty: intermediate. The half-lap joints at the center of each X take a bit of practice, so make a test piece from scrap wood first. A darker stain like walnut or driftwood gray enhances the farmhouse character without looking artificial.
