9. Felt Snowflake Table Runner

9

For a true statement piece, a felt snowflake table runner is a winter entertaining dream. It looks elaborate, but it’s really just a series of snowflakes appliquéd onto a long strip of felt.

Cut a long piece of felt in your base color, about 12 inches wide and as long as your table (a 6-foot runner works for most dining tables). Cut a collection of snowflakes in your chosen accent colors, ranging from small to large. Arrange them along the length of the runner, leaving 2 to 3 inches of space between each one.

Stitch or hot glue the snowflakes onto the base. For a rustic look, use a simple straight stitch around the edges of each snowflake. For something more refined, try a blanket stitch in a contrasting color. A cream runner with white and pale blue snowflakes, or a charcoal runner with silver and white, both look stunning.

This project takes a few hours, but it can be spread over a couple of evenings while you watch a favorite show. The result is a piece you’ll use every year for holiday dinners, winter brunches, and New Year’s celebrations.

Layer your runner over a longer piece of linen or burlap for added texture, and pair it with simple white dishes, mercury glass votives, and evergreen sprigs for a complete winter tablescape.
