8. Felt Owl Pencil Toppers
School supplies feel a lot more exciting when there is a tiny owl perched on top of the pencil. To make a topper, cut a small owl body, layer on wings, a belly, and eyes, and then cut a vertical slit up the center of the back piece. Slide the slit over the top of a pencil and add a dot of glue to hold it in place. A little dab of polyester fiberfill inside gives the owl a chubby, three-dimensional look.
Plan about ten to fifteen minutes per topper, and the difficulty is friendly for ages five and up. The project also works well for groups because kids can each create their own unique topper to take home, making it a great classroom craft or scout meeting activity.
Because felt toppers can slip off if the slit is too wide, double-check the fit before gluing. A snug, slightly stretchy fit usually works best. If you want to get fancy, you can add a tiny scarf, a miniature book, or a graduation cap for a school-themed variation.
