7. Felt Owl Applique Patches
Appliques are a fantastic way to personalize a backpack, a denim jacket, a pillow, or a tote bag. Cut an owl shape from felt, layer on a smaller belly, two wings, and eyes, then either glue or stitch the entire piece onto fabric. Fabric glue is the fastest route, while stitching gives a more durable result that will survive countless trips through the washing machine.
Each patch takes roughly fifteen minutes to assemble, and the applique itself can be added in another five. This project is well suited for ages six and up, especially if the child is allowed to choose the placement and decorate with buttons, beads, or hand-stitching.
These also make wonderful gift toppers. Tie one onto a wrapped present with twine instead of a bow, and you have an instant keepsake that does not get thrown away with the wrapping paper. Older kids can make a whole collection of patches in different colors to swap out based on their mood.
