9. Hog Wire and Wood Frame Trellis

9

Hog wire panels have become a favorite in farmhouse-style gardens, and for good reason. They’re inexpensive, sturdy, and the wide openings make it easy for plants to climb through. Combined with a chunky wooden frame, you get a fence that looks substantial without feeling heavy or closed off.

Materials: Hog wire or cattle panel cut to size, 2×4 boards for the frame, 4×4 posts, fence staples or U-nails, and wood stain or paint.

Time: A full day.

Difficulty: Intermediate. The wire can be tricky to stretch tight without help.

Build a simple wooden frame for each panel, then roll the wire across the back and secure it with fence staples every 6 inches or so. Mount the framed panels between your 4×4 posts, and you’ve got a fence that feels both rustic and modern. The wide openings in the wire mean even large plants like climbing squash or pole beans can weave through without crowding.

For a more decorative touch, add a horizontal top rail with the project name or a row of finials. The structure looks great on its own, but it’s even better once the climbing plants fill in and soften the look.
