6. Rustic Branch and Twig Lattice

If your yard already has trees, this is the project that practically builds itself. After a storm or a good pruning, gather the branches and twigs and weave them into a charming lattice fence. It’s the most natural, organic-looking trellis on this list, and no two will ever look the same.
Materials: A pile of straight branches about an inch thick (willow, hazel, or any flexible hardwood), longer branches for the frame, jute twine, and a small pair of pruning shears.
Time: 3 to 5 hours, plus time to gather materials.
Difficulty: Beginner. It’s essentially adult basket weaving, attached to a frame.
Start with a simple wooden or branch frame—four pieces lashed into a rectangle. Then, lay thin branches vertically across the frame, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Weave horizontal branches in and out of the vertical pieces, securing each intersection with a small piece of twine. The result is wonderfully rustic and will weather beautifully in the garden.
This style works best with light climbers like nasturtiums, black-eyed Susan vines, or climbing nasturtiums. The branches themselves add visual interest, so even without plants, the fence looks intentional and pretty.
