9. Maximize Container Gardening on Patios

As the sun’s angle changes in the autumn, areas of your yard that received full sun during the summer may now find themselves cast in deep shadow. Container gardening offers the ultimate flexibility to combat this seasonal shift. By planting your autumn vegetables in pots, fabric grow bags, or window boxes, you can easily move your plants around your patio, deck, or driveway to follow the path of the sun.
Containers are also ideal for autumn gardening because they are much easier to protect during a sudden frost. You can easily move a potted kale or Swiss chard plant indoors, into a garage, or under a covered porch during an exceptionally cold night. Choose containers with excellent drainage holes, and use a high-quality, lightweight potting mix. Leafy greens, radishes, bush-type brassicas, and herbs like parsley and chives all thrive in container environments during the cool autumn months.
