4. DIY Pallet Wood Coat Rack with Basket Storage
Pallet wood is a favorite for rustic projects because it is inexpensive and full of texture. This version adds wire or wicker baskets to the bottom, creating a spot for gloves, hats, or pet supplies. It feels like a miniature mudroom station, even in a small entryway.
Materials: pallet wood, 3 to 4 coat hooks, 2 wire baskets, L brackets, wood screws, sandpaper, a pry bar, a saw, stain or paint, and wall anchors.
Instructions: Carefully disassemble the pallet and remove nails. Cut several slats to the same length for the back panel. Arrange them side by side with small gaps or tight together. Attach them to two horizontal support boards on the back. Sand thoroughly, because pallet wood can be splintery. Stain or paint as desired. Attach the hooks to the front. Mount the baskets using L brackets or screw them directly into the support boards. Hang the entire rack on the wall.
Time: 3 to 4 hours. Difficulty: Intermediate. Customization: Use one long basket instead of two small ones. Add a small chalkboard label above each basket, or keep it plain. Display suggestion: Put umbrellas in one basket and dog leashes in the other. Helpful tip: Always sand pallet wood outside and wear a mask, since it can contain dust and debris.
