9. Cork-Backed Mat With a Cotton Topper
Cork is naturally warm underfoot, slightly springy, and provides excellent grip without any chemical backing. It’s an appealing option for parents who want to avoid synthetic foams.
Materials: A roll of thin cork underlayment, a sturdy cotton canvas or linen for the top, and fabric adhesive or a sewing machine.
Cut the cork to your playpen dimensions. Cut the cotton an inch larger on each side, then wrap it around the cork and secure it underneath with adhesive or hand stitching. Add a few quilted lines through the layers if you want a little more loft and a tailored look.
Time: About 90 minutes. Difficulty: Beginner.
This mat stays cool in summer and doesn’t get clammy, which makes it a good choice for warmer climates. Cork shouldn’t be soaked, so keep it out of the washing machine and wipe it down instead. A double layer of cork gives noticeably more cushioning than a single sheet.
